It’s the month of love and SA PROMO Magazine did some investigation into South Africans dating non-South Africans.
Sam’s partner is from Margate in Kent. They met through a mutual friend.
What are the main cultural differences between you and your partner?
Religious exposure for sure and drinking habits as he goes to the pub all the time! The whole school ethos is hugely different (not so much a cultural thing, but part of upbringing) and also generally, I think they grow up far more quickly than we do because they use public transport from such a young age and have less parental input.
However, having said that, Tristan comes from a two family, stable home and both parents are ver hard workers, this is actually quite similar to SA culture, but for UK culture, I think his upbringing and family life is rare!
What is the best thing about your partner not being South African?
Being able to take him to SA and show him how beautiful it is and introducing him to all things Saffa, like a proper braai, biltong, pronutro, NikNaks and game parks.
What are the challenges of dating a non-South African?
If it works out and there is a future, where will you end up in the long run, in the UK forever?
What South Africanisms has your partner picked up from you?
Nothing yet, but I'm working on it...
What elements have you adopted from your partner’s culture?
Speech patterns like dropping the t in Waterloo.
