Best Thing About the Country?
It’s always warm, the local cuisine is amazing and the people are incredibly friendly.
Biggest Cultural Difference?
Everyone speaks English despite the fact that inhabitants come from all over the world.
Top Things to Do or See?
1. Go swimming at Horseshoe Bay – it’s the most beautiful beach second to Blauberg Strand. 2. Go snorkelling amongst tropical fish off one of the island’s many reefs. The water is the most amazing azure blue. 3. Visit Harbour Nights every Wednesday along the capital’s Front Street where local vendors and artists display their goods and musicians keep you entertained all night until the finale fireworks display.

I moved to Bermuda with my husband six years ago. We were hesitant to live on an island that’s only 22 square miles, but we’ve fallen in love with the way of life here. Everyone is so friendly, polite and laidback, especially in the summer when thousands of cruise ship passengers visit the island. Everyone greets you with a “good morning” or “good evening” even if they don’t know you.

The best part of living and working in Bermuda is that you don’t get homesick. There are enough South Africans living here (mostly doctors, nurses, beauty therapists and accountants) that should you feel the need to speak Afrikaans – you’re sure to find someone. The local supermarket even sells Boerewors, although still no luck on the biltong. It’s too humid.

As for weekends, well you have a choice of hundreds of beaches, some more pristine and private than others and everyone knows someone who has a boat, so you end up on the water no matter what. Some of my best friends are Bermudian. They are a wonderful and beautiful people who love to have a good time, but also take their culture and traditions very seriously. Cricket anyone?
