Home Town in SA
Pietermaritzburg
Now Living in
New Zealand Auckland
Best Thing About the Country?
Beautiful country with relatively low crime
Biggest Cultural Difference?
Religion. New Zealand is very much a secular society in comparison to SA
Top Things to Do or See?
1. Beautiful scenery - from snowed capped mountains and glaciers to island like beaches
2. Adrenaline sports - bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating etc
3. Outdoor recreation - skiing, tramping, sailing
I was born in Pietermaritzburg where I lived until the age of 9 when we left for a new life in New Zealand. Having spent the majority of my childhood (and life) in New Zealand I have come to love this country. Let’s be honest, Kiwis are strange people (but in a good way). For as many similarities they share with South Africans (rugby driven, love of the outdoors etc) there are more than enough differences - and to this day I still catch myself laughing at sayings such as “sweet as”, “good-o”, “right as rain”, “Bob’s your uncle” (...who is this Bob? And what does his being my uncle have to do with anything!!! Haha)
I am happy living in NZ and wouldn’t change anything, but I will always miss SA. Although I am very much Kiwi on the surface I am still a very proud South African at heart and will always consider it to be my home.
