Best Thing About the Country?
The beautiful architecture, the Edinburgh Festival, Hogmany and being able to stagger home safely after a night on the sauce! Also, all the twee things like bagpipes, kilts and haggis - Scotland just has an amazing vibe!
Biggest Cultural Difference?
The food… I will never understand deep fried Mars bars! Coming from Durbs, snow and snow sports was a big shock for me as I'd never even seen snow! The ability to travel to foreign countries cheaply and easily and the fact people and look and be extreme and no one bats an eyelid!
Top Things to Do or See?
The castle, the palace and Rosslyn Chapel. Drinking 24 hrs during the Edinburgh Festival and seeing as many shows as possible! Sitting in the meadows on a sunny day drinking cider and camping on Yellow Craig’s Beach. Shopping on Broughton Street and catching a gig at the Picturehouse.
When I first arrived here about 12 years ago, I was keen to distance myself as far as possible from my South African roots and immerse myself in another way of life. As I've got older and become British, I now find myself proud of my heritage. I find myself cooking a lot of SA staples and my melktart is well known and appreciated amongst my friends!

I still call myself South African and when feeling a little homesick, I put on a bit of Johnny Clegg and crack open a Savannah. I enjoy the freedom and opportunities I have here and appreciate how different my life would have turned out if I hadn’t left SA and tried my luck abroad.

I do miss many things about South Africa though and I class myself as lucky to have had such an amazing upbringing in such a beautiful country. I love going back and I visit my family once a year. But I have gotten so used to a my life in Scotland and all its freedoms such as being able to walk the streets day and night, very low crime, great public transport and snow sports! I'm afraid this Saffa is now well and truly a Scot!!
