Best Thing About the Country?
We have the best of both worlds up here as Aberdeen is a vibrant bustling city yet within a few minutes you can be in and enjoy some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK.
Biggest Cultural Difference?
There is not the racial diversity that you find in South Africa or even that in London. I also miss traditional South African food so to get my fix I get my mother to send over parcels of Nik Naks and buy biltong every now and then.
Top Things to Do or See?
1) A day trip into the countryside
2) A visit to one of the many famous castles
3) A hike in summer or snowboarding in winter!
I relocated to Aberdeen with my boyfriend after living in London for four years. I was looking forward to the quieter, more laid back life and I wasn’t disappointed. That being said it doesn’t mean my social life has taken a backwards turn. There are a host of really trendy bars and clubs that kind of remind me of places back in Cape Town. I work as a pre-school assistant so my day consists of looking after kids between the age of 2 and 5. It’s hard work but loads of fun.
I have only started exploring the amazing countryside around here but have already found some beautiful spots. The views are breathtaking and we can sometimes have four seasons in one day. Aberdeen is known as the ‘granite city’ as like its namesake, most of the buildings are built with grey granite. It makes for an unusually pretty backdrop to the abundance of green.
