My life for the last six months has been working on yachts and so far I’ve mostly been in Florida. We pick up charter guests and give them the best hospitality during their vacation. The boat sails to the Mediterranean in the months of April to October and then to the Caribbean in December and January.
Life is great! I’ve lived in the US for five years and I own my own business called Woodsmoke which is all centred around bringing the vibe of Africa to the United States through people, products, and culture all while giving back to artists in Africa. Once a week I have South African evenings across the country at hotels, restaurants and people’s houses. We do South African wine tasting, cook South Africa ...
We’ve lived in Durban, Joburg and Cape Town as well as Dar es Salaam in Tanzania but America is completely different to any place we’ve lived. It’s just so vast and contrary to most beliefs, it’s very expensive to live here. Our life is just really an existence at this stage and we are finding it very hard not having our family and friends close by.
The coastline here is grey and dirty and cannot compare t ...
The USA was never on my list of places to live, certainly not New York City, and its so different from the small town life I had growing up in SA. But when the opportunity came up a few months ago, my fiancé and I jumped at the chance to try it.
After all, I had mastered London, so how different could NYC be? Six months in and I know that I was wrong. The big apple, Gotham, whatever you want to call it ...
So what do you need to know about a girl who was born in Klerksdorp, a small town not too far from Johannesburg, spent age five through 18 in Windhoek; survived a year in London by packing chicken fillets and luxury chocolates and eating over-priced Niknaks before moving to Cape Town for eight glorious years? You need to know that this girl gave up a fabulous life, a beautiful car, a very naughty cat, a suc ...
Most of what I really enjoy about this city happens outdoors – I am surrounded by mountains filled with amazing hikes and trails which, when conquered, often lead to waterfalls and incredible views. The weather reminds me of home (South Africa) – which suits me just fine as I have never been partial to the cold and really only venture out into the snow with the intention of skiing, which is another perk of ...
Life in the US is amazing.
Most people who think of the US have 3 words that pop into their minds; McDonalds, wealth and war, but America is so much more than that. My favourite part of the US is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For those of you who are unfamiliar with American history, that is where it all started. It is a very romantic city with oak lined streets, fantastic Art Museums, horse-drawn carriages ...
I run an expat social club for South Africans called South African Tarheels. We are based in Raleigh North Carolina. There are a lot of South Africans in our area and we have a great community. I have learnt that Americans are a kind and generous people. They throw their hearts into whatever they do. This is a culture which reaches out to fellow citizens and kids are taught to speak up and stand out.Th ...
What can I say, we're (my husband, Matthew and I) are happy here. Now, a little piece of my heart (actually a huge chunk) will always belong to my country of birth, but for now I have a young son to consider and so here we find ourselves. After living in the UK for 11 years, we spent a year travelling around OZ, NZ and the USA in a bid to establish which of the 3 we were best suited to and it must be said, ...
Took the opportunity to study university here after I graduated from Milnerton High School in Cape Town.
Been here for 2 years with the hardest transition being the miniscule living space in San Francisco compared to SA’s larger houses for a decent buck whereas here $1million dollars gets you a tiny condo. Secondly, the availability of parking spaces is almost close to zero and don’t even think of doing il ...
The saying ‘’Every single moment in your life has led you to this very point’’ is ringing true in my ears. Each and every defining moment in my life has melted into one single moment, right now!
And with that thought I look back on all the factors at play that have brought me to this precise moment.
After having dropped out of school, not for academic reasons -rather personal ones- the following years wer ...
Well, it started out as a 1 year study experience and turned into 8 years. The hardest thing about being here is being away from family and friends that are all still in SA. I miss rugby, cricket games and sausage rolls. There are stores in the U.S that sell SA food, but it’s not the same as waiting in line at King Pie!
