Best Thing About the Country?
We have the freedom to drive at night without worrying about being hijacked. Our kids, age 4 and 8, can play in the street without having to watch them constantly. We don’t have high walls or burglar bars and can sleep safely and without worry at night. If there is a crime, the police are all over it and it makes headlines so we are constantly aware of anything bad going on around us.
Biggest Cultural Difference?
The Americans are very passionate about their country and heavily invested in their politics, education and the health system. They are social within their own very tight knit group and not very welcoming to outsiders. They don’t ‘kuier’ like we do and it’s difficult to make friends that get us!
Top Things Done Since Back in SA?
1. East Texas is beautiful – reminds me of the Midlands Meander in SA (Durban), 2. The Houston Rodeo is a must – held once a year in March. 3. The Alimo in San Antonio, together with Sea World, are great places to visit!

We’ve lived in Durban, Joburg and Cape Town as well as Dar es Salaam in Tanzania but America is completely different to any place we’ve lived. It’s just so vast and contrary to most beliefs, it’s very expensive to live here. Our life is just really an existence at this stage and we are finding it very hard not having our family and friends close by.

The coastline here is grey and dirty and cannot compare to our beaches back home so we don’t get the ocean living we hoped for! We mostly stay home and do things around the house, get the kids off to school and watch a lot of TV! So certainly not the busy social life we led back home but it’s all about sacrificing for the greater picture which is hopefully to be able to offer our kids an alternative to SA so that they have choices when they’re older.
