Best Thing About the Country?
The United States is an amazing place to start your own business – easy access to capital, a huge market, and a spirit that encourages entrepreneurism. If you are willing to work hard, have a good attitude and passion, then the opportunities are seriously endless. I also really appreciate how effective the police force is here – you feel safe in most parts of the country.
Biggest Cultural Difference?
I miss the vibe of South Africa! People visit more, chat more and chill more. America is very corporate and systemised where in South Africa things are laid back. You also don’t have places like the Transkei in the United States. You don’t have the bush. There is a beat to South Africa that cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. That is what I miss!
Top Things to Do or See?
1. The Californian coast is absolutely spectacular. I would recommend taking a drive along the old coastal highway (101) from San Diego to San Francisco. 2. Skiing in the Rockies, some of the most beautiful mountains in the world. Some resorts I would recommend are Vail, Aspen, Snow Mass and Breckenridge. 3. Grand Canyon is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a must see. It will take your breath away.

Life is great! I’ve lived in the US for five years and I own my own business called Woodsmoke which is all centred around bringing the vibe of Africa to the United States through people, products, and culture all while giving back to artists in Africa.  Once a week I have South African evenings across the country at hotels, restaurants and people’s houses. We do South African wine tasting, cook South African food and showcase African art. They have been a huge hit!

I have also started a social media consulting business that I am busy getting off the ground. In my spare time I love to surf and braai with any other Saffas.  I miss South Africa immensely and hope to go back there and live in the next few years.
