I have a South African driving licence, is this valid in the UK?
Yes, for up to 12 months from when you became a resident. You can exchange this for a UK licence without taking another test, as long as you do this within five years.
What if I accidentally told my insurer I hold a UK licence and I still only have my SA licence?
You must tell them straight away. If details are incorrect, your insurance could be invalid. This could mean they may not pay your claim.
Is car insurance cheaper if I have a UK licence?
Possibly. Some insurers will not provide cover to clients with South African licences. This means the market is limited and prices can be higher as a result. It’s always best to exchange it when you can as this could save you money.
I built up no claims bonus in South Africa, can I use this in the UK?
We deal with insurers who will accept proof of South African no claims bonus.
Do I get a refund if I cancel?
Yes. Subject to no claims, we will refund you the premium for the period for which the insurance is no longer required, less any charges and insurer’s commission.
I only need cover for a couple of weeks on a friend’s car, what can I do?
Visit www.aplan.co.uk and click on the temporary cover option. You can pay by the day. Terms and conditions apply.
There are so many online companies, why should I use A-Plan?
When using the internet, assumptions are made about you and your circumstances. This means you could be left without cover, if the assumptions are incorrect. A-Plan make insurance easy. We search our panel of insurers to find a policy providing the cover you need at a competitive price.
