Another explosive month - rocking Roskilde, meeting the radical MC Spoek Mathambo, smashing the heart of Paris at Africa Express and discovering a new music genre!
I had the pleasure of travelling to Denmark and Sweden to perform at Roskilde, the biggest music festival in Scandanavia.175 bands and 75,000 people. The line up included Kanye West, Coldplay, Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Oasis, Slipknot and us - The Very Best - an outfit I'm the MC for! The Very Best also features Radioclit and Esau Mwamwaya, fusing Malawian harmonies with an electro pop finishing. Check out the album coming out this month, also featuring M.I.A and Ezra from Vampire Weekend.
Back in Paris, my Parisian promoter/producer friend Marvy da pimp told me that a South African MC, Spoek Mathambo was in town, so I found out what's he’s up to. Spoek is part of two groups, Sweat X and Playdoe, born in Johannesburg but now relocated to Sweden. His stage shows are wild, dressing in eccentric African inspired costumes! He will be touring Europe soon.
A couple of weekends later and I was on stage in the centre of Paris, for the French version of Africa Express - a show where musicians from different genres jam, from rock, hip-hop and soul to various African sounds. I DJed alongside Don Letts, The Kooks, Oumou Sangare, Magic Numbers, Amadou and Miriam, Super Furry Animals, Damon Albarn, Kano, Corinne Bailey Rae and Miss Dynamite. It was a beautiful evening and the audience was fantastic.
