London has a diversity of sports to support over the weekends and now a day at the baseball is fast becoming a great summers day out. After nearly two decades, baseball UK leagues have become as competitive as their American counterparts.

Baseball actually originated in England, between the 14th and 18th centuries, however, the USA adopted the sport and developed it into a cultural icon and cornerstone of
their society.

London boasts three teams - South London teams the Croydon Pirates and Richmond Flames, whilst the London Meteors are based north of the river. Teams compete at the highest level in the UK in the unpaid amateur league, the Rawlings National Premier League, as well as at the lower divisions of AAA, AA and A.  Players come from a diversity of countries including America, Canada, South Africa, Australia, the Central Americas and even Uganda. Families and friends rally behind their local teams, enjoying the long summer days in stadiums which mirror the football stadiums of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham football clubs.

The Croydon Pirates, playing at Roundshaw fields, are building the support of the local community, where a picnic blanket, basket and umbrella are most suited to enjoy the lively and entertaining games at the baseball grounds. The hotly contested London tournaments and Final 4’s end of season playoffs are also held at these grounds.

The clubs have also been holding summer camps for children aged 6-12 years old and are currently looking to invest and grow the sport through youth leagues. Baseball needs your support, so whether you’re a young player looking to take part in the game or just looking for a day in the ballpark - do head down to support a local team!

Baseball Softball UK and the British Baseball Federation is also gearing up for the Baseball World Cup being held around Europe in September. The South African team will be playing in Barcelona if you wish to support the cause and catch some Gaudi and a suntan too!
