SA High Commissioner invites South Africans to celebrate in Trafalgar Square

Published Date
11 June 2010

As we approach one of the most momentous days in our country's history, I want to invite you all to Trafalgar Square today for a big kick off event to celebrate the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. I'll be there at 11am, along with the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and we'd be delighted if you could join us on the square.

South Africans know how to throw a party and welcome the world, so in addition to all the live football action direct from the Rainbow Nation we'll be bringing the best of South African culture, entertainment and taste to London for the day.

The festivities include a performance by award-winning South African lyric soprano Pumeza Matshikiza, a mass Waving the Flag experience and some ‘lekker’ South African food, including bobotie and rice, koeksister and everyone's favourite, the boerewors roll.

There will be a free screening of the spectacular opening ceremony at 1pm and live coverage of the opening game as the 'Bafana Bafana' take on Mexico live from Soccer City, Johannesburg, at 3pm.

As well as the Mayor’s Office, we're working with FIFA partners Coca Cola and EA Games, with the chance to take part in some interactive sporting games throughout the day.

Please note this is a dry event, so alcohol may not be consumed in Trafalgar Square or the surrounding streets. But it will be a great party so please wear your South African colours with pride.

Vuvuzelas at the ready!

Dr Zola Skweyiya

High Commissioner
