South African advertising agency TBWA Hunt Lascaris Johannesburg was last night awarded with a top award at a London ceremony, earning South Africa its very first and prestigious Black Pencil.
A Black Pencil is a very rare 'gold award' as issued by D&AD, a British not-for-profit organisation that represents the international design, advertising and creative communities. Its inaugural awards ceremony was held in 1963.
Hosted by Jimmy Carr, the awards ceremony was held in Camden at The Roundhouse, where the TBWA team were present to collect their awards for the work they'd done on the Trillion Dollar campaign for their client The Zimbabwean newspaper. They used Zimbabwean banknotes as the medium of their campaign, handing them out as flyers with messages printed on them, as well as creating billboards and wallpaper out of them.
