Published Date
17 March 2010

St Patrick’s Day, here are some facts to make sure you could prove your Irish heritage in a snap.

  • St Patrick was not Irish and was actually born on the western English or Scottish coast around 385 AD.
  • St Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in three places – Ireland, Newfoundland province in Canada and Montserrat in the Caribbean. However, it is celebrated worldwide.
  • A world first, The National Leprechaun Museum in Dublin is set to open its doors in time for St Patrick’s Day 2010.
  • Because of the national holiday, bars remained closed in Ireland on St Patrick’s Day until 1970 when the laws were overturned.
  • The Guinness Book of Records is owned by the same named brewery company and was first published in 1955 after a bar dispute could not be settled by any existing book of reference.
  • It takes 119.5 seconds to pour the perfect pint of Guinness.
  • The three-leafed clover outnumbers the lucky four-leaf clover 10,000 to one. The leaves are meant to represent hope, faith, love and luck.
