ARGUABLY ONE OF THE BEST GROUPS South Africa has ever produced - the multi award winning Bongo Maffin reached new heights.  Sadly Speedy left the group to concentrate on his solo career.

“It was not due to any personal situation. But the funny thing about it was I’ve worked and done shows with them overseas. Even though I left Bongo Muffin they always ask me to come and do the shows with them and I’ve always done that”.

Born as Harold Matlaku, he is one of the few artists in South Africa who has collaborated with international singers including his idol Sisqo thus his nickname Mzansi Sisqo (South African Sisqo).

Speedy travelled to America to do the recording with Sisqo in the company of Keath Sweat and Dru Hill.  “I am not gonna take credit to the whole Sisqo and Dru Hill thing. It came about because of this wonderful woman Zinzi Mandela (Nelson Mandela’s daughter). She knew me before I became Speedy- once I got hooked up in the music business.  She told me “I know that you are a huge Sisqo fan. I’m gonna hook you up with him” and she did exactly that”.  She helped my solo career, getting me recognized in America and I owe her a lot”.

Seeing the last three members of Bongo Maffin Thandiswa, Stoan and Jah Seed releasing their albums is Bongo Maffin altogether history? “I am in the studio right now recording an album with Stoan.  However I guarantee you the next project that will come out from any of us is Bongo Maffin with Speedy in it”.

Not only an artist Speedy has appeared on the big screen in Hi-jack Stories as well as the TV series Backstage and most recently Generation (South African Soap).
