In the middle of Haydons Road, Wimbledon, lies a beautiful pub called the Horse and Groom. It is owned and run by Miguel and Heidi Coelho from Pretoria. The couple have managed to bring a touch of South Africa to the place, although the feel and look of the pub is still very British. It has also recently been revamped! Luckily for us, they stock all your favourite South African brands including Klipdrift, Cane, biltong and even creme soda.

The food is affordable with nothing over £5. They have a typical English pub menu, but you can find some homestyle favourites such as a boerrie rolls and a really nice steak and ale pie. The homemade Horse and Groom cheese burger was also great but, the best dish we had on the menu is definitely the chicken masala.

They have a big screen  TV for major sporting games and several large flat screens around the pub, and YES, if a big South African game is on, they are showing it as a house rule. Horse and Groom constantly arrange events to entertain the masses including poker, pool and even darts on Thursdays as a warm up to the weekend. I congratulate Horse and Groom for keeping up to date with great sport promos and events. The friendly bar staff never wear the same outfit, which keeps the place looking and feeling fresh and don’t be surprised when the bar lady answers you back in Afrikaans.

If you haven't been there, do grab the mates and head off for a few drinks and a bit of pool. It’s a good place to meet up with friends and enjoy a boerrie roll. The Horse and Groom makes a good home away from home and with Miguel’s big future plans, it is set to be the place to be and go to for any South African in London.
