I am feeling anxious and am unable to relax and concentrate, could it be stress?

Stress, anxiety and depression are becoming increasingly common with the pressures and worries of modern life and the recent economic downturn has seen an increase in stress related symptoms. Stress is our body’s natural response to dealing with difficult situations, whether they be long or short term. Most physical symptoms are caused by our body’s natural ‘fight or flight’ response which is intended to be used for dangerous situations and not for long periods of time. The chemicals and hormones released cause our bodies to be in a heightened state of alert longer than intended.

What are the symptoms?

Stress can be caused by circumstances at work, family related problems or financial worries, and symptoms can be both mental and physical.

Mental symptoms include:
Anger, depression, anxiety, insomnia, loss of appetite or anorexia, loss of sense of humour, paranoia, excessive emotion, crying, irritability and lack of concentration.

Physical symptoms include: Chest pains and heart palpitations, constipation or diarrhoea, dizziness and fainting spells, nausea and indigestion, feeling restless, excessive sweating, loss of libido and nervous twitches or tapping.

What can I do to reduce stress?

Regular daily exercise, plus breathing and meditation relaxation techniques can reduce your symptoms. Reducing your intake of caffeine and alcohol is important. Eating a healthy balanced diet which is rich in vitamins such as omega-3 and magnesium and carbohydrates will help balance your body and give it vital energy it requires. Having a positive attitude and taking time out for yourself to enjoy your life may seem obvious but is often overlooked in today’s hectic world. Talking a long walk in the park, playing with your children and pets, watching a funny movie and having a laugh with friends is essential for promoting good mental health and helping us become more calm and optimistic.

If you have any of the mentioned symptoms call us at MediClinic today to arrange an appointment with one of our experience doctors.
