I grew up in South Africa, is the sun dangerous in Europe and the UK?
The UK has the highest incidences of skin cancer in Europe because many people do not believe the sun can do damage and parents do not protect their children against harmful UV rays from early childhood. Whilst sunshine is good for us as an important source of Vitamin D, overexposure to the sun can lead to sunburn and skin cancer.
What is Vitamin D and why is it good for me?
Vitamin D is produced in the body in response to sunlight, it is very important for bodily function and lack of it can cause health problems such as bone disorders. It is difficult to get the required amount of Vitamin D from your diet alone and sunlight is therefore vital, however it is hard to know what level of sun exposure will provide you with sufficient Vitamin D. Doctors advice is to be sensible and get 20-30 minutes per day in short bursts and to avoid burning when the sun is at it’s hottest in the midday.
What about sun beds?
Many woman choose to use a sun bed prior to a holiday, unfortunately many do not understand the risks involved in sun beds as they produce the same amount of UVB radiation as midday southern European sun and many do not comply with the British and European standards for cosmetic tanning units. Dermatologists are calling for the ban of coin-operated and unmanned sun beds and for salons to provide adequate information to clients.
