A team from the Canary Islands will attempt to combat the highest mountain in Africa this month, to raise funds for the building of a village in South Africa for orphaned children. The project, propelled by the Pearly Grey resort in Tenerife – owned and managed by South Africans – will hopefully begin building the village by the end of the year.

“The spread of AIDS in Africa, and in particular SA, has resulted in unprecedented numbers of children being orphaned, and little or no Government funding is made available to help.”

The Pearly Grey resort’s church in South Africa will be building the village on 14 hectares of land that has been purchased. The village will be named ‘Ingane yami’ or ‘my child’ in Zulu and will be built up of 25 children’s homes, each housing six children plus a foster mother. The second phase of the project is to build a junior school in the village.

Pearly Grey resort has already raised enough funds for the first phase of the project – land, earth works, assembly hall, manager’s house, medical centre and the first five houses, however they still need to raise enough for the remainder. Each house will cost 17k Euros to build and they say that they intend to sponsor one of the houses from their own personal business. “Ultimately, we would like to fund the ongoing costs involved in keeping the six children that will then live in the ‘Pearly Grey’ house. We will then challenge other companies and private businessmen to follow suit and also encourage anyone who travels to SA to visit the village and become a part of the programme.”

The climb up Mount Kilimanjaro will take place on the 8 December, where the developer of Pearly Grey Resort, James Beckley and his wife Karen, will take part with their daughter, the Sales Manager of Pearly Grey as well as various other Tenerife businessmen. Beckley, who grew up in South Africa, says, “I think the defining difference with our village is the project has an aim to raise up leaders which is a long term plan.”

Progress of the climb and the village can be followed on Twitter, Flicker, Facebook and a blog.
