How did you get into hairdressing? Is it something you have always wanted to do?
I had a midlife crisis at the tender age of 25. After being a slave to the corporate monster for seven years I was craving something more meaningful and something that had a real impact on people’s lives. I needed a creative outlet. I always had a natural talent for hairdressing. I just made a life choice and took the plunge.
What inspires you?
When someone comes into our shop all meek and mild, unsure of themselves and clutching some vague idea of what they want to look like. Contrast this with their flushed, giggly and happy-teary state as they see their new reflection revealed in the mirror. Together we take a journey of self-discoveryЙ this is what really inspires me!
What did you study to get where you are today?
I studied at the Carlton Hair Academy in Rosebank, Johannesburg and after completing the required apprenticeship hours passed my trade test within 12 months. The real learning never stops as we are constantly updating our skills but to be quite honest our clients teach us something new everyday.
Have you ever been involved in hair shows?
I have done the odd hair show in SA and New Zealand and enjoyed the excitement of the entertainment industry when working on a local SA soapie, 7de Laan, but I much prefer the satisfaction I get from working on real hair and real people.
Do you prefer cutting or colouring?
I love them both. They are both required for a complete make-over.
If you had to do one of the SA Promo team’s hair, would you consider doing a SA flag colour combination?
I would love to get my colouring kit out for Natasha if she’s willing to add a little yellow, green, white, black and blue to her existing red!
