Illustrator - Steven Moseley

What is your art background?
Apart from spending most of my youth copying the work of the master that is ‘Jim Lee’, I have no real background in art or design. My high school art teacher in matric told me I was useless and for a long time I stopped drawing. It was after too many nightshifts working security in London with nothing else to do but doodle that I got back into it. I started designing a few tattoos for friends and then made up my mind to take it further. I moved home and did three years of Graphic Design at the Cape Peninsula University
of Technology.

What do you do as a professional illustrator?

Myself and a good friend started a company called Darkwater, doing mainly editorial illustrations, logos and character design but we also produced two album covers for SA artists and did decor for a circus tent
at Ramfest.

I even did the artwork for the latest Led Zeppelin album (released in March in HMV) and also for an upcoming Bob Dylan album! This was quite an unexpected job, as I was recommended by a friend because the production company wanted someone with the ability to render realistic images and luckily that someone was me!

What has been the best thing you’ve worked on?
My best was my first! SA band Pariah Born, who were friends of mine, took a huge chance by letting me produce their first EP’s artwork (above) as I was new to the industry and had no real portfolio to show them. It’s still one of my favourite pieces and gets me the most positive feedback! Pariah if you reading this, then BOOYOW!

Why London again?
My move back to London is definitely about taking my illustration further and learning new techniques.

What is your ultimate job?
My ultimate job would be working as a pencil artist for Marvel or DC Comics.

And how easy is it to become an illustrator?

I’d say it’s as easy as following any other dream!
