The recent Homecoming Revolution event hosted excellent speakers who talked about the many real opportunities in our home land.  The day covered gaps in the market for those entrepreneurs who were still looking for ideas, and the challenges that could be faced by those returning.

Entrepreneurship in SA

It was acknowledged that being an entrepreneur can be challenging and perseverance, as well as being prepared to work hard, are essential.  Being a jack of all trades also helps, especially in the initial phases.  Action and an enthusiasm for your idea are vital as portrayed by Kevin Vermaak of Cape Epic, a South African who returned with an idea and made it happen.

South Africa offers many opportunities for entrepreneurship.  The strong monetary policy and an efficient tax system mean that South Africa is weathering the global storm better than most.  And there is always opportunity in crisis.  So now is a good time to start a business.

The main areas for growth
identified were:

Education/training
Infrastructure
SA is the stepping stone into Africa
BEE and the black middle class
Social entrepreneurship
Sporting events
Health
IT

Tips from entrepreneurs …

When you first get back don’t use all your hard earned pounds to buy expensive assets.  Live frugally and use this money to build your business.
You may have lots of ideas.  Select the one that is right for you and stick to it.

The Call to Return

Those who have travelled are ideal to become entrepreneurs in SA.  They have shown that they are prepared to move out of their comfort zones.  They have learnt new skills in life and business, as well as having been exposed to new ideas.  They return with an advantage.
It was acknowledged that returning to SA is an emotional decision and often not a practical one.  Much of the fear about returning is related to a loss of identity.  We come from a country that no longer exists.  You cannot step into a river in the same place twice.  You have changed and so has SA.  Being secure in your own identity is important.  It is when we are insecure that we fear another.

In order to return we also need to accept imperfection.  Only go back if you relish the whirlpool that is SA and intend to be part of the change.  It is up to us as the people of SA to take action and be engaged in the change.  What SA needs are energy creators and not energy sappers.

The resounding message Й there are opportunities in SA, if you are willing to give it a chance.  And if not, be an ambassador for South Africa wherever you go.
