Just under a year to go peeps, the biggest party of 2010 is coming to South Africa. For the first time ever the FIFA World Cup will be staged on the African continent. So warm up the vocals, practice your spot kicks and dig out your SA shirt as we help you get ready for the event of the year.

Getting warmed up – the Confederation Cup

The Confederations Cup is a ‘practice run’ ahead of the World Cup – and takes place every four years like the World Cup. Now in its eighth year, Brazil are the current defending champions. It kicks off in Johannesburg from 14 – 28 June, with Bafana Bafana as hosts. ‘The boys’ are drawn to play Spain, the USA and Iraq in their group, so if you can’t be home for next year this could be your World Cup. Get down to cheer the team on and hopefully with your support they could go far.

Show your support Zakumi the mascot

The colourful leopard with a green ‘fro’ is the official mascot and face of the World Cup. Zakumi’s birthday coincides with Youth Day and he’ll turn 16 next year during the tournament when South Africa play their second group match. His name comes from ‘ZA’ – the code for South Africa and ‘kumi’ – a word that means ten in various African languages!

Get kitted outOfficial merchandise

If you’re wanting to show your spirit for the tournament, get down to any Sneakers or Total Sports store or go online and find his cheeky smile adorning many a stylish t-shirt and hat.

Make some noiseThe Vuvuzela

An essential part of the culture of football back home, the Vuvuzela requires some serious lip and lung strength to blow, and emits a monotonous noise like a deep foghorn.  With local folklore claiming that ‘a lot of noise can kill a baboon’, expect to hear a lot of these going as Bafana Bafana lead Brazil one-nil with less than 15 minutes to play!.
