Before rushing headlong into the new year, making resolutions and focusing on new goals, take time to reflect on this year. Take a moment now to look back on 2009 and remind yourself of what you have accomplished.
We tend to be good at looking ahead at our goals and dreams, and looking back at our failures. Consequently we end up never looking back at how much we have actually achieved and what we have to be grateful for.
Here are some great ways to start 2010, by appreciating 2009:
• Write down all your big achievements. This will remind you of how capable you are, what you had to go through to achieve them, the obstacles you overcame and that you got there in the end. Use this list when you are being challenged, to remind yourself that you have got through tough times before and can do it again.
• Make a list of your smaller achievements. This reminds you that you didn’t just suddenly arrive at a goal, but that you have taken little steps everyday to get to where you are now. These are therefore just as important as the big achievements. This reminds you, in this quick-fix and results-driven world we live in, that you need patience and perseverance to get you to where you want to be.
• Develop an attitude of gratitude. Many people live their lives focusing on what they don’t have. And when we always focus on what we don’t have this is all that we see - all the lack in our lives. It’s no wonder that so many people are unhappy. Why is it that in this day and age it takes a life-changing event for us to sit up and take notice of all we do have? No matter what your situation, there are always things to be grateful for… events and people in your life, big and small!
Finally, the past is often associated with failures, so people are afraid to look back. But if there was ever a reason to reflect, this would be it. How can you move forward if you haven’t learnt from the mistakes of your past? Learn from your failures so that you reduce the risk of making the same mistakes again. Now take these lessons with you into the new year.
By focusing on your achievements and the lessons you have learnt, you will be better equipped at facing the new year and setting more realistic goals.
