  ANC President Jacob Zuma has voted to the sounds of a singing crowd in his hometown of Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal. Zuma arrived a little later than expected at 11h37. He has stressed that there will be a smooth transition to his administration.

• 12:15 Pencils used to vote not pens
  Pencils, and not pens, are being used in today’s elections - because it’s cheaper. Pens were used in the three previous general elections. KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial electoral officer Mawethu Mosery said this morning that it was fine for people to make their cross with pencil. He dismissed concerns that the use of pencils increased the chance of fraud, and said voters should ensure their marks were clearly visible.

• 12:30 Zuma's daughter 'couldn't find ANC box'
  ANC President Jacob Zuma's daughters were in a chatty mood after voting in Johannesburg on Wednesday. Dressed in the ANC bling, which recently hit the political catwalks, Duduzile said: "I feel great, fantastic." She was with her sister Phumzile, 22, who had voted for the first time. "It's a little scary, I didn't know what to do," said Phumzile. Duduzile joked: "She couldn't find the ANC box, I was laughing and saying 'you know what your father looks like'," she laughed.

• 13:00 Drama at Brakpan voting Station
  In Brakpan, angry voters were pulled out of the queue by election officials because they had not registered at that particular station. Bernadette Taljaard said she registered at the Tweedy Park station in a previous election but because that station no longer existed, she turned up at the nearby Indoor Sports Centre station.
