Vodacom Bulls winger Francois Hougaard scored a controversial try after the final whistle to book his team a home semifinal in Soweto with a 40-35 victory over the Crusaders at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night.
In a nail-biting match where the lead changed hands no less than eight times in the second half, Hougaard crossed the line for the second time to steal away the win from the New Zealanders, and ensure his side recorded an important victory that may well keep them at the top of the Vodacom Super 14 log at the end of next weekend’s rounds.
The Crusaders will now need a final-round victory over the Brumbies to ensure they make the semis and if they do, look likely to make the long trip back to South Africa to play that match.
