Nik Rabinowitz grew up on a farm just outside Cape Town, where he spent many years climbing trees and commentating on his own rugby games in at least three of South Africa’s eleven official languages. The farm community defied Apartheid’s Group Areas Act, with the result that Nik grew up amongst isiXhosa-speaking people, and to this day is still the white sheep of their family.

After leaving University with a Business degree, he travelled Southern Africa with a theatre company and a herd of donkeys, inspiring a foray into stand-up comedy. Nik sometimes uses his business degree to make paper airplanes and to intimidate other comedians, but not much.

Over the past ten years he’s established himself as one of the country’s premier acts, well known for his multilingual satire and passion for goats. In 2008 he was awarded SA Stand up the Year, solidifying his position as the world’s leading Jewish-speaking Xhosa comedian.

Nik recently appeared alongside eight of SA’s top stand-ups in “Bafunny Bafunny” at The Royal Albert Hall, and burst briefly on to the UK comedy stage with a guest appearance on Mock the Week.

Nik on Nik

  • As a schoolkid I was dashing and debonnair, with a flair for the ladies. I was like a 13 year old George Clooney, only better looking. And I have burned all evidence to the contrary.
  • I went to a Waldorf School. It gave me great life skills, like playing the treble recorder, planting veggie gardens, and crocheting my own underpants.
  • The secret to my success is I run a small sweatshop in Limpopo Province where 13 year-old children work day and night crafting my fart jokes and one-liners.
  • People would be surprised to know that I'm actually quite a serious guy. And that I own and operate a professional Hedgehog racing league in Johannesburg.

On London

  • It is wonderful to visit our far Northern Province, and the Saffas are always hungry for home grown jokes.
  • There are so many things about London that we young white South Africans love, like the fact that for many of us the Tube represented the first time we’d been on a train. It holds a special place in our hearts.

See Nic LIVE in London @ the Soho Theatre 21st - 23rd of April 2011
