2010 is indeed the year of all things South Africa. From 24-27 January, at the annual MIDEM music trade fair in France, South Africa is the ‘Country of Honour’ with SA artists performing, including Parlotones, Kurt Darren, Lira and more.

Here are some ideas of what to do this weekend in the UK:

1. Watch the docu-movie ‘Mugabe and the White African’ (London)

Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous 2008 presidential election, ‘Mugabe and the White African’ follows Mike and son-in-law Ben Freeth’s harrowing attempt to take Mugabe to an international court for racism and violation of their human rights.

On Friday 22 January, there is screening of the movie, followed by a Q&A with director Lucy Bailey at the Tricycle Theatre in north London.

2. Celebrate Australia Day at The Church this Sunday (London)

At its new venue of The Clapham Grand, this should be a fun day out if you can stomach a Sunday drinking session and a Monday hangover! All the usual music, acts and games will be going on as before, but in a new location! Australia Day is the 26 January, but this weekend will be when all the events happen!

3. January specials at Joe Cools in Fulham (London)
