WELCOME, You are in the old website section up to 2011, please click HOME to view the website in the new 2012 design and system. THANK YOU!
DATE: 21st of MAY 2011
You are all invited to a wonderfully South African Experience. A Braai, where you will get to enjoy Potjie Kos,
maybe for the first time…maybe for the first time in 20 years.
The Annual Spring Beach Braai and Potjie Contest will be held Saturday May 21st at the
Sandy Hook Beach Braai Area in NJ. About an 1 hour drive from Manhatten.
RAIN DATE MAY 22nd. If it is raining I will call it the night before and send an e-mail and
update facebook on the evening of May 20th.
Venue:
Sandy Hook Beach Braai Area. Drive 5 miles along Sandy Hook till you get to the fork in the road where the
big missile is. Look for the SA flags and the canopy of Braai smoke.
How to get there:
From the North, take exit 117 off the GSP and take route 36, follow signs to Sandy Hook. If you get to
Sea Bright you have gone too far. From the South: take exit 105 onto rout 36 (becomes Joline ave)
all the way to the beach then turn left and continue on route 36 till you see the signs for Sandy Hook.
The nearest train station is Long Branch(North Jersey Coast line from NY Penn), but folks are
responsible for their own taxi’s too and from the station.
Attendees what to Bring:
It is a Bring and Braai, which means it’s free to attend and you bring
1. your own meat, food and drinks. There are 2 large braai’s available to use. We will supply the
charcoal and designate some key braai Masters to take care of the braaing for everyone.
If you want to be a Braai Master you will need to bring your own tongs and prove your prowess
in the selective tong test before we start!
Hand your meat to a Braaimaster, grab a dop and enjoy the day.
There will be Boerewors for sale at the event at $7/lbs. e-mail me before hand with what you want
so I can bring enough to meet demand.
2. Also please bring one dish,(preferably a South African style dish) to share, either for dessert or main.
This be left on the tables for all to enjoy. Once the Potjies are done and judging has completed they
will be available for everyone’s enjoyment after the prize giving at 4pm. We will supply some
paper plates and cutlery but please also bring your own as we only have enough or about 50 folks to start.
3. Chairs to sit your self on and shading for you and yours.
There are nice clean ablutions facilities at the place so no worries there.
Start time for Attendees is from 12 noon till dusk 6:30pm(must be out by dusk from the park)
Dogs are allowed, but must be kept leashed or at least under control.
Alcohol is allowed, but no hard liquor.
There is a beautiful swimming beach, walking distance from the braai spot as well as really nice
bike riding tarred surface which goes for miles.
Contestants what to bring:
Your $35 registration fee.
Most importantly you must bring your own heat/fire source. This might mean chucking the braai
on the back of the bakkie before you go, or it could mean putting a little gas unit in your boot
before you go. But be aware, judges will be mingling with the chefs during prep and cooking
and impressions are everything.
The two fixed braai’s available are for general braai’ing and won’t be available for the contest.
Of course you need to have your potjie and all its ingredients.
The Judging will be at 3pm sharp, with prize giving not later than 4pm. For this reason you might
want to get there as early as you need to prepare your perfect potjie. We will be at the spot from
4am, so any company and help setting up will be great.
All Potjies are to be left on the tables after judging for all guests to try and enjoy
You will get forms asking you to fill out the team name and other details.
You will be allocated a number for judging. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize will be cash prizes dependant
on how many people enter as well as other sponsored items. If we get 10 entries 1st prize will
be $100, second prize will be $50 and 3rd prize will be $35 etc… The winner will receive the
coveted trophy and be crowned Potjie Champion for 2011.
As you may have heard, this has become somewhat heated, with factions developing based on
Rugby Teams, Countries and even brother against brother. There are at least 3 Americans entering,
and they threaten to topple the Shark supporters 2 year consecutive reign.
Will it be a Red, White & Blue Potjie this year or will the Bulls finally pull off a win?
Last year an American came in 2nd, so anything can happen.
Judging:
Will be done by a panel of impartial judges. They will be given judging sheets and the tastings will
be blind, in that each contestant will receive a number and the judges will not know who they are judging.
Judges will be encouraged to tour around and meet the chefs before hand while they prepare their pots.
A copy of the judging form has been enclosed for Contestants and potential contestants to study.
If you are looking to purchase a potjie pot from me for the event, the cut off date is Friday May 13th to get
your order in – no later. A number #3 potjie will set you back $100 all in.
