On Tuesday 21 April 2009, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund UK will be hosting another fundraising “Swish Party” for over 200 ladies at Henrys in the City near Liverpool Street. A “Swish ” is where ladies bring along items of clothing and/or accessories from their wardrobe which they don't want anymore to exchange for other items brought to the party by another guest. A small admission fee is charged in order to raise funds for the charity.
Each year in the UK, women wastefully throw away approximately 900,000 tonnes of clothing and accessories. The majority of these items end up filling landfills with non-biodegradable textiles, which present serious environmental problems. Meanwhile in Southern Africa, young girls, who would not be able to comprehend such amounts of wasted clothing, face many difficult and complex challenges including poverty and disease. The burden of poverty often falls squarely on these women and girls; we see girl children who are forced to abandon their dreams to look after the sick, dying and their siblings.
Our work is all about creating a better life and more opportunities for children and youth, and by doing so, make a real contribution to the lives of individuals and their communities.
On the Swish night, we will also have Fashion Designers speaking to the ladies before the Swish starts, along with lots of other activities. There will be a special VINTAGE clothing section with lots of pretty clothes! Also to make the Swish even more exciting, we have been asking female celebrities, actors and sportswomen to donate a small item of clothing or accessory, which will be secretly added to all the other items and coded, so that when each lady has chosen her Swish clothes and is leaving the event, will then be told if she has a special celebrity piece and who it belonged to!
Tickets are £10 and we would ask you to purchase these soon!
