SA in limelight with Oscar nominations

It is indeed the year of South Africa - from music to movies, and of course sport! The Oscar nominations were announced on 2 February. As anticipated, South Africa came up in two films - District 9 and Invictus. The 82nd Academy Awards take place on 7 March. See the Academy Awards website for the full list of nominations.

District 9, the the sci fi epic set in Johannesburg, was directed by South African born Neill Blomkamp. It received nominations in the following categories:
- Film editing
- Best picture
- Visual effects
- Writing (adapted screenplay)
Invictus, the Mandela story behind the unifying events of when SA won the 1995 Rugby World Cup (which opens in the UK on Friday 5 February), received nominations in the following categories:
- Best actor (Morgan Freeman as Mandela)
- Best supporting actor (Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar)
