Security in Motion

Throughout the world moving cash from one place to the next poses a huge problem for those in cash businesses. Knowing that hard earned cash has to be transported from premises to bank, and back again can be anxiety inducing to say the very least. This is especially true as numerous reports of bandit style cash in transit robberies flood the media.

The fact that 843 cash in transit heists were reported worldwide in 2008 is a daunting prospect. Not surprisingly, 190 of these attacks occurred within South Africa alone.  This makes cash in transit companies, and how they transport and protect the cash in their care an essential element of the business process. Companies like G4S Cash Solutions (SA) a specialist Cash In Transit (CIT) Company have stepped in to fill the gaping void that exists in the cash carrying market.

“We specialise in identifying and managing the risk faced by our clients. This means that each client has a specifically formulated comprehensive system in place to protect their business. We look at 5 elements whilst devising such a plan. These include the probability of an attack, potential losses and their cost if a heist does occur. We also take into account the controls required to prevent an attack and a fool-proof response plan should a robbery occur. Ensuring that we have in depth knowledge of our clients’ needs makes us a market leader when it comes to our cash in transit services”, says Hannes Venter of G4S.

G4S is a leader in the CIT industry because they understand the importance of having a comprehensive risk management strategy for each and every client. Strategies such as the ones created by G4S go a long way to protect the lives of employees and customers alike. They effectively protect the client’s assets whilst reducing the cost that an attack would have on the client’s reputation and standing in their specific industry.

“It is essential for cash reliant companies to have plans in place to protect their most basic asset, cash. A company that fails to plan for the eventuality of something happening to their cash whilst it is being moved is setting itself up for disaster. It stands to reason that if a company does not choose a reputable CIT company the greater the impact of an attack if one occurs”, continues Hannes.

Companies like G4S are streets ahead of their competition in their forward thinking approach to cash in transit. Not only are they top notch in terms of strategy and planning, but they offer the latest in technology and vehicles. They have some of the only fully armoured cash in transit vehicles in South Africa.

“With rear-entry, biometric controls, state of the art drop safes, interlocking doors and 1 or 4 person operations, clients can be certain that once their money is in one of our vehicles it is as safe as possible. Combined with our rigorous staff recruitment and training procedures this means that we can offer clients a service that is the best in the industry. This is why a survey conducted last year shows that G4S handles 65% of the cash in transit needs of South African companies proving our strong standing in the industry”, concludes Hannes.

By implementing inclusive, risk adverse strategies G4S is able to maintain its stronghold in the South African CIT industry. By doing what they do best they are able to reduce the risk of heists to employees and clients alike in all aspects. By focusing on the prevention of loss G4S is going a long way towards changing the face and minimum security measures in place in CIT industry in South Africa.
