The first official ‘open to all’ sokkie in Scotland for South Africans living in Scotland. Of course non-South Africans are also welcome if they wish to experience this South African tradition. A sokkie is a type of dancing style, similar to Ceilidh dancing is for the Scots.

The sokkie event will be held on 20 February at The Scout Hall in Livingston which is a short train journey from Edinburgh or Glasgow. It will start at 7pm and continue until the last train leaves.  There is no theme, hence dress as you wish and come and enjoy the evening with us! (See SA PROMO events calendar for full details)

If you need accommodation, do get in touch, as organiser Elize says " ’n boer maak ‘n plan!"

In true SA style, you can bring your drinks, alcohol or otherwise, as well as something to eat. There will also be various SA products on sale, but no alcohol on sale due to licensing laws. If you are interested in selling your stuff, you can also buy a table for £10. Please contact Elize to book a table.

To cover the cost of rentals, the entrance is £7 per person, with under 10’s getting in for free. This is a great family night out and also for all you singles out there!

This will be the first event, as part of a new initiative, and loads more is planned for the year ahead.  To hear more about what events they run or for more info on the sokkie, please contact Elize on 07876 421 044 or Corne on 07795 332 661.

Elize has lived in Scotland for 10 years and has organised a few different socials over the years.  She also helped to establish an Afrikaans Congregation for South Africans to worship in their own language. They now have two services a month.  The social committee of the congregation hosted a few sokkies in the past two years which were very successful, but mostly attended by congregation members and their close friends. They thought it would be a good idea to host an open sokkie which can be attended by anyone!
