YLSR turns spotlight on solving violence and crime in South Africa with the launch of the YLSR World Cup Campaign 2010 United Kingdom & South Africa: football and theatre initiatives to support youth development London, 22 September 2009 – Youth Leadership and Social Responsibility (YLSR) - an international charity organisation, has launched the “YLSR Campaign 2010” to provide youths aged 9 to 19 with training on leadership, social responsibility, conflict resolution, anti-violence, anti-racism, self-esteem, AIDS awareness/responsibility through football and the arts - in the run up to the FIFA 2010 World Cup. The “YLSR Campaign 2010” is being supported by the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA).
With the world’s attention on South Africa for the FIFA 2010 World Cup, YLSR’s aim is to raise awareness of social responsibility and leadership training as a potential solution to the violence and crime challenges facing youth in both South Africa and the United Kingdom.
Maureen A Bryan, YLSR founder and CEO, says, ‘I have had a growing concern over the years for young people – particularly those marginalised and under-represented. At a time when resources are constrained, it is now more important than ever to continue investment in our youth. By engaging young people in activities they enjoy such as football, theatre and music we aim to cultivate and nurture leadership and social responsibility skills to develop talented role models that will then give back to their communities and ultimately be the solution and not the problem.”
With support from the PFA, Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and inspirational leaders in football, sports, theatre, music, youth education and humanitarian work, YLSR aims to equip today’s youth with the skills that will enable them to become leaders in their personal lives, communities and greater society.
YSLR is celebrating its 2010 launch with a fundraising dinner and live concert at South African High Commission, SA House, Trafalgar Square, which will include a performance by the Soweto Gospel Choir. Join YSLR on 2 October, for a truly African cultural explosion.

International Youth Leadership and Social Responsibility Campaign 2010 (YLSR Campaign 2010) is inspired by the extraordinary courage and leadership exemplified by Dr. Nelson Mandela and the men and women alongside him who committed their lives to the pursuit of a free and democratic South Africa.
VISIONYLSR’s vision is to leave generations of youth empowered with knowledge, strength and courage to pursue their full potential to become responsible leaders within their communities, conscious of their power to drive social change, and become the solution to some of our future’s greatest challenges.
FOOTBALLWorking in partnership with grass-roots organizations in South Africa such as the Soweto Youth and Development Projects and Altus Sports, YLSR will support programmes which deliver leadership and social responsibility training through football. One such initiative is the “Streetsoccer” league, which uses Life Skill Score cards to determine a winning team - not by the most goals scored but on how the game was played.
THEATREIn partnership with The Market Theatre Laboratory, based in Johannesburg, and leading South African actors, the ”YLSR Campaign 2010” will present the play Robben Island and Shakespeare. Aimed at 9 to 19 year olds, they will engage in after performance Q&A with the actors, improvisational role play; acting technique games; and discussions on topics of leadership, social responsibility, conflict resolution, anti-racism, anti-violence, peace, social activism, self esteem/confidence building, making a difference, communication skills, AIDS awareness and responsibility and environmental sustainability and other topics that affect our futures.
