With a recent SAMA nomination in the RnB / Neo soul category for his debut album Self Inflicted, this is one way of classifying the music Byron Clarke is putting out. But he is first and foremost a singer songwriter with a gentle power in his voice. It is radio friendly with easy listening tunes, a soothing soul vibe indeed.

Think John Legend and James Morrison. The songwriting is where Byron shines most brightly. Clarity in vocals creates emotionally charged little pieces of his being. And the heart-on-his-sleeve style songs, often set to classical piano, make for the ideal contribution to the R&B genre.

A boy from a tough background, having grown up in Elsies River in Cape Town and recently losing his mom to cancer, Byron has a survival theme centrally inserted his music. Lynne is a touching bonus track about his mom, celebrating all that she was. Favourites on the album include Flutterbyes, Self-inflicted, Another Way and Pieces of Me.

His lyrics also feature intensely on aspects of weather, a common topic for those in the UK where Byron is soon headed to test international waters with Stereotype Records. But despite songs named The Rain, Clouds and Cold, this is a beautiful debut contribution that is soaked in sunshine and positive reflection.
