CD review: The Parlotones - Stardust Galaxies

Judging from their global success and the assortment of creatures which grace their music videos – from foil covered dragons to miniature multi-coloured bunnies – something extra-terrestrial is underway with The Parlotones, as if breadcrumbs of cryptic clues are left for us listeners to discover...

With the new album carrying a similarly outer space style name, for their third offering it shows that these boys are not stopping any time soon… and they’re only getting better! Much like U2, one couldn’t have predicted their scale at such an early age – and only time with tell which paths Kahn and fellow Parlos will tread in the future. Similar to Bono, Kahn has been involved in issues wider than records and sell-out shows, he did his bit in the Earth Hour campaign in 2009. (Remember, you read it in the pages of SA PROMO Magazine last April where we coined the word ‘parlo’, meaning seismic or huge, ie. That band was totally parlo man, they blew us away!)

But let’s talk of the album Stardust Galaxies itself. In the track Life Design they teamed up with KFC to promote a cool ‘snacking culture’ image to the youth. It’s not my best though, with others such as Remember when…, Welcome to the Weekend and Fireflies and waterfalls standing out as future favourites! Boom Boom Room’s song Here comes a man is also nicely re-done with a Parlos touch!

Also released this month, the Parlos marketing team is in overdrive as they launch Push Me To The Floor, their new white wine (and aligned to a song on this album of course!) This follows in the vino stomping footsteps of Giant Mistake, the Parlo red variety. Giant Mistake was from their previous album, whereas Push Me To The Floor is a new offering off Stardust Galaxies, a catchy tune worth singing along to and one which has been nominated for Record of the Year in the 2010 SAMAs.

All in all, another fab out-of-this-world Parlotone offering. Catch them on 8 April at Electric Ballroom in London.
