These days a lot of emphasis is placed on organic foods – it’s not just a hype or a new fad, it’s a serious business and a worthwhile consideration if you care about your health and the welfare of animals.
Factory farmed meat and poultry often contain antibiotics and hormones and when we eat these meats, our body has to process these foreign substances which place a great strain on our immune and digestive systems and upsets our hormonal balance.
Many processed meats are also high in additives and come in packaging ready to heat before eating. Since they are stored in plastic and aluminium a lot of the chemicals are leached into your food as soon as they become heated and are then directly absorbed by your body. Processed, luncheon and smoked meats should be avoided as far as possible as they are full of harmful nitrates.
Since red meats are high in saturated fat, it is better to choose organic turkey and chicken and to keep the red meat varieties to a minimum.
The welfare of organic reared animals is certainly streets better than non-organic reared animals so you are not only doing something good for your body, you are doing something good for the animals and the environment.
