FUMI:    I have recently found out I am pregnant, what now?????

DR: Congratulations.  Well the very first thing you need to do is register with your nhs gp, as this way you are ensured a place is booked for you in the hospital for the day you will have your baby.

Most importantly is to ensure that your heath and your baby’s health are in tip-top condition throughout the pregnancy. This would involve regular check-ups with a gp, as well as routine blood tests and essential ultrasounds.
MediClinic has recently launched a pregnancy package which encompasses all of the above.

FUMI: Tell me more about this package and why I should consider it?

DR: Although the NHS does provide this service,  time constraints do not always          allow all your questions to be answered, and you often see a different clinician at each consultation.  It is important to maintain continuity in treatment and build a relationship with your clinician during this emotional time.  MediClinic allows you to do this, as you will have one doctor attending to your needs.  With regards to the blood tests, MediClinic offers comprehensive screening with rapid results.  Ultrasounds are important to monitor foetal wellbeing and although the NHS offers ultrasounds, it is not always possible to have these as regularly or as early as eight weeks.  With MediClinic pregnancy package we would refer you to our expert ultrasonographer at 8, 12, 21 and 32 weeks.

FUMI:  Why do I need so many scans?

DR: The 8 week scan ensures this is a viable pregnancy and the baby’s heart beat is found.  The 12 week scan assesses any foetal abnormalities including Downs Syndrome and other genetic disorders.  At the 21 week scan it is possible to see the gender of the baby, and foetal growth is massessed.  The 32 week scan will check the   positioning of the foetus to ensure the baby is in the correct position for a normal delivery.
