iText keeping SA parents updated about swine flu in schools

As of Friday, a total of 190 Western Cape schools were facing suspected cases of swine flu and numerous other schools nationwide have come face to face with the same problem.

Parents, teachers and learners alike are giving in to the panic and rates of absenteeism have begun to rise, despite education departments in all of the provinces urging parents not to keep their children out of school unless they are ill. There is also a precedent for state schools to remain operational despite the closing down of some of the top private schools in the country.

It seems that the spread of the H1N1 virus in South Africa is inevitable. The question is how will it best be managed? This is of particular concern in schools where young people share space and germs on a daily basis. An even bigger worry is how these schools will communicate their management strategies to the numerous concerned parents who clog school’s switchboards with calls every day.

Something has to be done to make the process of communication to parents the best it can be especially during times like this when levels of anxiety are high. This fear is even more prominent after the first two fatalities attributed to this potentially deadly virus were reported last week.

“It is not surprising that parents are worried. Parents would be irresponsible not to take an active interest in what is happening in their child’s school with regards to the current swine flu outbreak. According to the many schools we deal with everyday parents have been calling in incessantly which blocks other callers from getting through, this leave schools with a huge problem. As a result our company decided to introduce our latest technology called iText,” says Salah ElBaba, Managing Director of Smsweb, a well known digital communication company specialising in establishing and maintaining contact between parents and schools.

iText has been developed by Smsweb in order to distribute complex text-based information quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively to parents cellular telephones. This information can be accessed by parents from their phone at anytime, from anywhere and without the hassle of passwords, codes or numbers. This means that parents have access to swine flu related news 24/7 offering them some peace of mind during this stressful time.
