Natural Remedies for Swine Flu

I do not want to add to the media scare over swine flu as the cases that I have come across have been uncomfortable but very manageable. I have however had a number of patients contact me because they are concerned, so I have put together a little information on some natural remedies that could be used to help prevent flu or to treat flu. If you would like any more information or advice or would like to book an appointment please do contact me via telephone or the email address above. You are also very welcome to pass this information on to anyone that you think may be interested.

There is plenty of information on the NHS website on how to identify swine flu and what to do if you think you may have swine flu: www.nhs.uk

Homeopathy

Anna barb (also known by the branded name Oscillococcinum)

It can be taken, once weekly, during an epidemic or during the winter period to help to strengthen the body against flu like illness. It is also very helpful against the fear of contracting illness.

Gelsemium, Aconite, Ars iod & Eup perfoliatum

This is a blend of a number of homeopathic remedies that have traditionally and very successfully been used to treat flu. This may safely be used along side any conventional medicines. Take 1 pill every 2 – 3 hours until symptoms start to improve.

I can prepare and post remedies out at £5 for a 7g tube plus £1 for postage.

Supplements & Herbs

The following advice is NOT suitable for children, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking other medication or suffering from any serious health conditions. Do speak to your doctor first in these instances.

Vitamin C

This is well known in decreasing the duration of flu infections as well as boosting the immune system. Take 1000mg daily. For flu infections increase the dose to take 1000mg 3 times daily. Ensure that you drink plenty of water while taking high doses of vitamin C.

Cats claw

I have read some conflicting advice on the use of Echinacea for Swine flu. Echinacea may actually make things worse if you have a swine flu infection so take the herb Cats claw instead. This is a great herb to treat viral infections as well as boost the immune system.

Diet

Avoid eating sugars and refined carbohydrates such as white bread, cakes, pies, pastries as well as high fat foods and excesses of alcohol and coffee as these weaken the immune system, so that we are more susceptible to infection

Keep your body well hydrated – lots of water and herbal teas.
