Cape Town Afrikaans rag Die Burger reported Yengeni spent Sunday night in police cells. They say he was arrested at 6pm driving a Maserati. He was seen leaving the police station on Monday morning after being released on bail of R500.
This comes after Defence and Military Veterans Minister Lindiwe Sisulu earlier had to defended a decision to select Yengeni onto a committee dealing with a review of the defence force. She said the former Umkhonto we Sizwe commander, was the best man for the job.
In 2004, Yengeni was convicted of defrauding the South African parliament by accepting a discount on a car during the tendering process for a arms deal. At the time he was a member of a parliamentary committee reporting on this deal. He spent four months of his four-year sentence behind bars before being released on parole.
He must have spent more time in bars because in November 2007 he was arrested for drunk driving in Goodwood, Cape Town. The case was withdrawn because his blood sample was unfit to be taken for chemical analysis after someone was erroneously given access to it.
He is currently being investigated by the police for illegal directorships in contravention of Section 218 of the Companies Act (1973), which states that anybody convicted of theft, fraud, forgery or perjury is to be disqualified from being a director of a company.
Yet, it seems the ANC loves these kind of guys. Is it because his values are in step with those of the ruling party?
