With his frenzied concert schedule around the globe, Guy Buttery seems to touch base less and less with his South African audiences due to an ever expanding repertoire post the release of his third and latest album Fox Hill Lane. The response Guy has received for what he believes to be his most mature album to date, has been phenomenal. Apart from the obvious accolades surrounding winning awards, Guy has also met nothing but glowing reports on both the musicality and production of Fox Hill Lane with international press. The most noticeable of these being a three page spread in the latest edition of Guitar Player Magazine (the world’s biggest guitar related publication)which subscribes to over 11 million readers worldwide).
Media hype aside, the proof is in the product. One seldom finds Guy playing to anything but a full house. His shows are always enchanting, each of them reflecting a very intimate portrayal of Guy’s personal and musical journeys over the years. The songs, more often than not inspired by the natural beauty of his hometown in KwaZulu Natal, will take you far beyond the confines of what you see and hear in front of you. This year Guy returns to London after a two year hiatus and will be playing compositions from Fox Hill Lane as well as other concert favourites.
His debut album When I Grow Up… was released in late 2002 to great critical acclaim. Comprising of highly original self written acoustic fingerstyle compositions, Buttery was the youngest nominee in the history of the South African Music Awards of the same year. 2005 saw the release of his follow up album, Songs from the Cane Fields, which was once again nominated at the SAMAs for Best Instrumental Album.
After creating such a unique hybrid fingerstyle technique, using both hands on the fret board, creating polyphonic, percussive and harmonic textures, it wasn’t long before he caught the attention of a loyal cult following.
