Brushing your teeth twice a day is one of the things our parents teach us from a very young age and while this is enough, doing it properly is much more important.
According to research, we receive the best-polished results when brushing for three to four minutes rather than the conventional two minutes. While two minutes has been enough in the past, it surely isn’t the case today.
With increasingly acidic foods prevalent today, we need to do more than just brush our teeth to protect them from damage.
Brushing your Teeth effectively
In studies conducted in the 1990s, it was evident that brushing your teeth for two minutes led to good results but not excellent plaque reduction which calls for other techniques to help.
So, with that being said, we brush our teeth with the aim of removing the plague that, mind you, accumulates within hours of brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth for a short period of time or not for long, increases the plaque on your teeth, increasing the danger of damaging your teeth.
Complications such a bad breath and gingivitis can occur when we do not care for our teeth in the way that we should. So, what method of brushing should we use? It actually all depends on a few factors.
How to protect your teeth
Those who may have damaged the surface of their teeth through the exposure to many acidic fizzy drinks, tend to have weaker teeth. This means that the use of abrasive toothpaste and hard bristles can cause much more damage than it needs.
Now, using soft bristles as well as applying light pressure addresses the stubborn plague on your teeth. This, however, is not a substitute for flossing which gets into places a toothbrush cannot.
Consult your dentist for the best way to take care of your teeth and oral health.
