Mieliemeel (maize meal) Vetkoek with Onion Recipe

For those people who don’t know ‘vetkoek’, they are deep fried buns that can be eaten sweet or savoury, accompanied by anything from apricot jam to minced Beef Curry.


  • 1 cup Mieliemeel (maize meal) 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon grated onion
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) Cooking Oil

Heat the oil in a pan


  1. Sift dry ingredients together.
  2. Beat eggs and add milk.
  3. Stir in flour mixture.
  4. Add onion and mix well.
  5. Drop spoonfuls into hot oil and bake until brown. Be careful that the oil is not to hot to ensure that they are cooked. Repeat until all the dough has been used.
