There is traffic build up on the Suez Canal after a 200 000 ton mega-ship ran aground and blocked off the route in both directions on Monday, 23 March.

The massive container named Ever Given was headed to the Mediterranean from the Red Sea when it turned and became wedged across the canal, blocking it off to other traffic.

The vessel has been stuck for 20 hours, and several attempts to guide it out of the Suez Canal have failed. Five tug boats were sent in to pull it free, to no avail.

Ever Given belongs to Evergreen Marine and measures 400m in length and 59m in width. The ship is scheduled to arrive in the Netherlands on 31 March but that might not happen.

Rescue efforts are ongoing.
