Not long if it’s up to the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL), but unfortunately it is not up to them but to a rather frugal British legal system, which will always opt to look after its citizens, no matter what.
South Africa seeks to have Dewani extradited to stand trial for allegedly ordering and paying for his wife Annie’s shooting in a Cape Town township in 2010. But the news that the extradition hearing in the UK has been postponed to July 2013 has angered the ANCWL. In a statement they say the ANC Women’s League in Gauteng in conjunction with the national office of the Women’s League, will now support the Gauteng government initiative to launch a “Bring back Dewani” campaign. The campaign will appeal to the High Commission in Pretoria to speed up the process of having Shrien Dewani extradited to SA to face charges relating to his wife’s murder.
“The Women’s League will demand Shrien Dewani be extradited back to South African and stand trial for the crimes he is accused of. It must be made clear to the international community that South Africa is not a slaughter house and justice must be allowed to take its course. We will be handing over a letter to the ambassador in which we will be raising our concerns as South African women and we hope this plea will reach the courts in England when Dewani’s extradition hearing begins again in July,” they say.
The ANC Women’s League also said they are committed to fighting patriarchy and bringing an end to all forms of gender based violence. All women are encouraged to join the march to the British Embassy in Pretoria and make their voices heard. “Say NO to violence against women in South Africa!”
