Prioritisation is key. If you don’t know what your highest priority tasks are, how do you know what you need to do first?
Once you have established your priorities you need to be honest with yourself. You know when you are procrastinating and admitting it is the first step to change.
Here are some solutions to the most common reasons for procrastination, namely feeling overwhelmed by a task and not feeling motivated to complete a task, usually because you find it unpleasant in some way.
Feeling overwhelmed:
• Break the project into smaller tasks.
• Write an action plan.
• Start with some small tasks. The sense of achievement will spur you on.
Low motivation:
• Reward yourself for completing the task.
• Ask someone to check up on you. This is the principle behind life coaching and is very effective.
• Or identify the unpleasant consequences of NOT doing the task now.
Try it. Not only will you get more done while experiencing a sense of achievement, but you will feel more energised too. You can overcome procrastination.
