The Western Cape’s transport department has released video footage to support their hard-hitting approach to road safety. The release of CCTV footage is part of the department’s ‘Safely Home’ campaign.
The video shows a vehicle smashing into the rear of a bakkie causing the pickup to collide into a barrier. Children are flung from the back onto the road. As the dust clears, you will spot children moving on the road.
The ‘Safely Home’ campaign uses several eye-opening methods of curbing bad road behaviour in the province. Grim CCTV footage is part of it. Other videos contain images of children hit by vehicles.
Western Cape transport minister Donald Grant says his Crash Witness campaign is to frighten people with graphic video from CCTV cameras showing the effect of speeding and far too many people walking illegally on roads. “It’s a shock-and-awe tactic to try to change behaviour. What we’re really trying to do is change the behaviour of our drivers to make sure they’re far more responsible.”
