His lengthy legal battle to avoid extradition to SA has frustrated South African justice officials and the public as he seemingly tried every trick in the book to avoid facing the charges brought against him in SA. At one stage his legal team even showed the infamous “Pappa Wag Vir Jou” (Daddy is waiting for you) video – an anti drink-drive advertisement – in court to convince judges he would be sodomised in South African prisons while awaiting trial.
The 33-year-old was refused permission to appeal to the UK’s Supreme Court earlier this month, but it was widely expected he would take his case to the European Court of Human Rights, a body well-known for overturning the rulings of British judges.
However, the UK’s The Telegraph reports sources close to the Dewani legal team has said this will not happen. Dewani is currently being detained under the Mental Health Act after being diagnosed with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is said his flight to Cape Town is booked before 6 April where he will be held in a hospital until he is fit to stand trial.
Three men has already been convicted of the murder and sentenced, but some of them has said in evidence they were paid to plot a botched carjacking in a township outside of Cape Town to shoot Anni and let Shrien escape.
Family members of Anni have confirmed that they have been informed of an imminent extradition.
