DIY Electricity time for South Africans

Trade union Solidarity is encouraging its members to seek do-it-yourself alternatives to lessen the impact that the ongoing electricity crisis in South Africa has on them. That is also the reason why Solidarity will be the main sponsor of the annual KragDag Expo during the last weekend of June, an Afrikaans do-it-yourself expo with its central focus on energy.

Solidarity Chief Executive Dr Dirk Hermann says all indications are that Eskom’s ability to generate electricity will decline further in the coming months and years. “Solidarity’s members at Eskom are doing their best but we are also aware of the predicament in which Eskom finds itself. That is why we are eager to cooperate with KragDag. The Solidarity KragDag Expo – a family fair – will provide our members as well as the public with the correct information and support to become less dependent on Eskom at work, at home and in their communities, such as at churches and in schools.

KragDag Executive Director Mr H.P. Steyn said that they were excited about collaborating with Solidarity. “Our motto is ‘Do your own thing’. We want to assist individuals and communities to become free and independent, rather than being dependent on government assistance. In collaboration with Solidarity we are going to strike a blow against electricity dependency.”

Steyn said that since 2008, the expo has attracted thousands of visitors and exhibitors annually for a festive and informative occasion. “The Expo is for families; it combines practical energy technology and seminars, related DIY solutions and, last but not least, entertainment for young and old.”

Hermann says that Solidarity is planning to launch various public actions in the run-up to the Expo. “The Solidarity Research Institute has been working on a research project on affordable, small-scale electricity supply. More details will be announced later but we are going to exert huge pressure for the abolishment of the regulations that hamper independent electricity supply.

This year, with the slogan “Do your own thing”, the message from the Solidarity KragDag Expo is that there is no need for anyone to be without electricity just because Eskom has trouble to supply it.

For more information, or to attend the expo on 26 and 27 June at the Diamond Valley Estate near Rayton, east of Pretoria, visit www.kragdag.co.za
